I have to admit…
Giving in and becoming one of those insufferable Dark Souls folk was one of the best things I’ve done.
And I hate myself for it.
Like playing From Software’s critical darling, I tried, and failed miserably, at trying to resist its charms back in 2011.
“It canny be that good.”
“Fuck playing that pish, it looks a broken pile of balls”
“Nope.”
This was the common response from myself whenever asked if I had played. Of course, this was usually followed with the standard “OH MY GOD HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE IT ITS SO GOOD” bile that comes with being right into your Souls games.
This all changed after one payday weekend where I was feeling particularly flippant with the cash.
Enter Dark Souls 2.
No, this wasn’t the game that sold me on the Souls games, but it was my gateway drug to them.
Playing it was a slog, it looked like the brownest PS2 relic you could imagine and you can bet your arse I traded it in after a while, but it had its claws in me. I knew then I was in trouble. But forged ahead in the denial that I was destined to become your typical Souls wank.
A few months passed. I was happy with my mildly challenging titles in my games library. Then some wannabe Chris Nolan Van Helsing reboot arrived on the shelves.
Bloodborne.
This was it. The moment when it all made sense. I had become a lover of these games. The quick combat and alluring lore was too hard to resist.
Suddenly I was celebrating boss victories, learning the locations of wrong un’s and loving the lore. It was and still is one of the best games I have played this generation. Not that it’s hard to find one…
I had become a “Souls” fan.
Now I am the one questioning the nay-sayers. I’m beyond an awful parody video series test subject as “Dark Souls virgin plays game he hates”, becoming the man who laughs at the thought of not liking the series.
I am now a twat who actually spent some of his time to write about how he likes SOULS GEMES.
And I love it.
So here we are, less than a week till Dark Souls 3. I’ve done shameful amounts of watching gameplay videos online, feeding the hype inside. After all the doubting and resistance, I can finally openly accept that I am a total slag for these games.
The whole experience has taught me to keep your mind open and try any title I can. Even if they look like a Channel 5 special (looking at you Quantum Break).
Roll on April 12th. For I will be getting baw deep in the death and glory that will be the return of Dark Souls.
